Useful Non-BD Tools

Post by johnomg »

G'day All :D

I've always been a Fan of Freeware or Shareware and in my time come across some Small Programs that I have found very useful.

With that in mind here is my starting contribution to this Thread.

Yrefresher - Automatically refresh web pages.
This Internet Explorer addon automatically refreshes websites for you. You can set it to refresh your pages at custom intervals or any predefined ones. Each browser window has its own refresh control available from the IE toolbar. handy for monitoring auctions, stocks or any other pages that change frequently.

Sadly the Author's Website is no more, it can be downloaded here: Yrefresher

Pro's:
- It's Free and Small with no Adware or Spyware.
- Each IE window can be set to it's own Refresh Rate.
I use it to check Forums for New Posts, saves me having to refresh IE myself

Con's:
- After installation you need to turn it On to see the Button.
(on the other hand it's good that it can be turned Off)
- The Button and Text are a bit Large.
(the button can be resized but still a tad long for my liking)

Anyone else have a Nice piece of Freeware or Sharware they use and would recommend???

Regards
John :D

That alone should be the biggest entry on your con list.

Therefore, here comes my suggestion:

Mozilla Firefox

Pro:
- open source (thus no backdoors etc.)
- not from M$ (thus not a popular target for hackers)
- reliable HTML renderer with increasing accuracy.
- many useful plugins available.
- frequent updates (thus very fast in fixing security issues where IE might take years to do so)

Con:
- does not come with your Windows CD (therefor must be downloaded and installed separately)

Wow that comment brings back memories. I remember Mozilla devotee's always claiming that it was more secure than IE. While I never disputed whether it was or wasn't, I always thought that being the less common of the two Browsers (back then anyway) was a critcial factor in it's Security.

I have used it a few times, it's certainly handy to have as it has a few abilities IE doesn't, but I'm not particularly bothered which I use, my preference being IE as it does what I want without much trouble.

I think that could be a Pro, imagine the changes M$ would have made if they had got their hands on it

What bugs me the most about IE (and M$ in general) is how they release a Update (usually late on a Friday) and expect the General Public to be the Guinea Pigs for them. I tell all my IE friends "TURN OFF AUTO-UPDATE!" it causes more troubles than it fixes.

Wow, Off-Topic hey .... .... Back On-Topic

I would certainly recommend people at least try Firefox :D

P.S.
Turn off Yrefresher if your composing a Post :pissed:

I second that; I use Firefox exclusively. :)

I need to find
