Celebration!! - another BD puzzle

Post by Arno »

Today I'm getting 10000 days old! :D

To celebrate this fact, I release a new BD puzzle for all of you to tease your brains with...

You can play this puzzle in 2 "levels" - whether you directly use the help of the maps on my site (or in your memory ;)) or not.

Cheers!!

Here comes the puzzle:

Arno has recently played 5 Boulder Dash caves. Find out which ones.
- All caves are made by different authors: Peter Liepa, Sendy, RTADash, Falcon Soft and Don Pedro.
- All caves have a different titanium wall color: yellow, red, blue, orange and green.
- All caves have a different time limit (on level 1): 40, 80, 120, 160 and 200 seconds.
- All caves require a different amount of diamonds (on level 1): 15, 20, 50, 75 and 99.

Some hints:
- Don Pedro's cave requires more diamonds than Peter Liepa's cave, but less diamonds than RTADash's cave.
- The orange cave, having 80 seconds of time, was not created by Falcon Soft or Don Pedro, and requires more than 15 diamonds.
- RTADash's cave does not have the highest time limit, and is not surrounded by a green or an orange titan wall.
- Sendy made the red cave. This cave gives the player 120 seconds less han the blue cave, which requires 20 diamonds.
- At least one of the 5 "caves" is actually an intermission!

Good luck!

Yes, born on the 6/12. :)

Hope I haven't made the puzzle too difficult!

Well, perhaps not too difficult in general, but I think it might cost a lot of time to find out which cave combinations actually exist.

Is it theoretically possible to solve the puzzle without the hints??

It is of course possible to pick the caves from the maps and then find 5 caves which together match the given properties. This is boring work indeed! :)

The actual puzzle is a variant of "Einstein's zebra problem". In such a puzzle the hints play an important role. By filling in a scheme you determine which combinations of properties occur, and which are not possible.

Here's another example:

Here's a MS Excel version (with chart) if anyone wants it. :)

In the meantime, I'll get to work on cracking this also. :D

One more thing:
Arno wrote:- All caves have a different titanium wall color: yellow, red, blue, orange and gray.
...
- RTADash's cave does not have the highest time limit, and is not surrounded by a green or an orange titan wall.
However, green isn't one of the choices - Is this a trick or a typo?
Boulders are round.
Fireflies are square.
I need to find
a'way out of here.

Thx for spotting! Definately a typo - should be 'gray' instead of 'green'.

Well, I've got 4 parts of the solution - but can't find a remaining cave that meets the requirements. I won't spoil it for anyone, but I'll post it in size 0 text, so you can press the quote button and see what I have if you so desire.
[size=0]
Sendy Dash 2 - Cave (Int) 10: Red Walls, 40 Seconds, 15 Diamonds
Peter Liepa BD2 - Cave D/1: Orange Walls, 80 Seconds, 50 Diamonds
Rory Agsten RTAD6 - Cave 13(K): Yellow Walls, 120 Seconds, 99 Diamonds
FalconSoft Dark Cave - Cave 21: Blue Walls, 160 Seconds, 20 Diamonds
Don Pedro - ???

I can find multiple DP caves that offer 200 seconds, but not one of those requires 75 diamonds (I searched Masters BD also). However, one requires 70 diamonds.
@Arno: can you locate my mistake?

It's my previous mistake again... I changed 'green' to 'gray', but I should have changed 'gray' to 'green'.
*Getting older* :(

Now your remaining cave (a green one) does exist.
