No, the maximum number of diamonds you can get from one butterfly is 7.
5*7=35. So, 38 diamonds is too much. Remember that it's a steelwall and not breakable.

After careful and considered reflection, which included looking at my horoscope, casting bones, praying to the mighty Rockford in the sky and checking my manual on flower arranging geometry.

I say the answer is 31 :?
3x7 and 2x5

All body parts crossed, dancing shoes on standby.

Veto! What if you hit a bitterfly, for example, on the square which is two squares below the second stone from the left??

ROCKFORD collects DIAMOND, digs DIRT
DIAMOND outvalues DIRT & BOULDER
DIRT carries BOULDER, blocks FIREFLY

I agree with you Dustin, there is a 8 Diamond hit available, but I couldn't follow the rest of your strategy, so I thought 7 Diamonds was the Optimal Kill amount to collect the maximum amount of Diamonds.
Massive Edit - Disregard, I don't know what I was thinking :? wrote: The way I saw it:
- Push the 1st left Boulder to the left out of the way
- Make a path from the 1st Pit to the 2nd Boulder
- You get a 8 Diamond kill (as you said)
- 4 Diamonds will fall into the 1st left Pit
(This leaves it part full and the 1st left Boulder with nowhere to go)
- 1 Diamond will be left on the Wall as they don't fall off
- The 3 remaining Diamonds will fall into the 2nd Pit, followed by the 3rd Boulder
- If the Butterfly is at the top of the 2nd Pit when hit it will destroy the Diamond that hit it (maybe the one above it too) and replace the one on the Wall to it's left with it's own
- If I thought it out right, that means 4 Diamonds in the 2nd Pit with the 3rd Boulder sitting on top
- The 3rd Boulder is now out of play and prevents the Diamonds under it being collected.
- A 8 Diamond kill took 3 Boulders out of play, minimal gain I thought???

I'm probably wrong, my "Theoretical Strategy" sucks as you know
Anyway, I'd be interested to know how you got your 38, your mind works on a level way above mine when it comes to this stuff :)

Thanks
John :D

That sounds very interesting, I will check out, if you really can get 8 diamonds from one butterfly. I suspect that if you try to get 8 diamonds as you described, Rockford will be killed by the explosion. I recommend you try your theories with a bd clone that includes a map editor... like for example boulder remake.

In my opinion, 31 diamonds is not the right number.

I can run very fast, ask the Wife, especially when my well-being is involved

Dustin probably has a sensible explanation :)

Maaan!!! I'm lucky if I can get a game to run right, let alone do that, ask anyone here

Oh well, it was worth a shot :D

Yes, I know, I was wrong... Sorry. Shame on me.

31 diamonds is the correct answer, and of course you can get 8 diamonds from one butterfly. And the explosion will not hit you, when you do it right.

But I still don't think that your way, johnomg, leads to the right solution. However, johnomg, I think it's up to you again :D

If someone wants to know the way to get 31 diamonds, just let me know. But maybe you find it out yourself... Not very difficult after Dustin's very good hint.

I thought the maximum number was 21 diamonds

I agree, I re-read my partial solution and realised that it had a flaw in the first step, if you look back at it I did a "Massive Edit" :(
However, johnomg, I think it's up to you again :D
If you don't mind, before I claim the right answer I would like to hear Dustin's solution, because my strategy was flawed and his answer is possibly still the correct one.

Dustin would you like to explain the 38 or concede??? :)
I thought the maximum number was 21 diamonds
That's ok we all make Boo Boo's

I must admit I do not have a definite strategy yet, that was only a guess and I had not thought about the problem very deeply.
John, I think you have deserved the status of having solved the question.

Ok Dustin, I'll give it a try

In Boulder Dash 01, 02 and 03. Other than Timers or the Status Bar display, what will not start until Rockford has fully appeared in certain Caves???

Let me guess:
The Amoeba noise. Of course, this is not the case in the Atari version, and also not in the C64 version if the game was paused before hatching.
